Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne illness that can affect people of all ages, including children. With the rising number of cases during mosquito season, it’s essential for parents to recognize the symptoms early in kids to ensure timely treatment and avoid complications.

Early Signs of Dengue in Kids
  1. High Fever: One of the first signs of dengue in children is a sudden, high fever that lasts for 2-7 days. The fever can reach up to 104°F (40°C) and often comes with chills.

  2. Severe Headache and Eye Pain: Children may complain of intense headaches, especially around the forehead, and pain behind the eyes.

  3. Body Aches and Joint Pain: Dengue is often called “breakbone fever” due to the severe muscle and joint pain it causes. Your child may feel fatigued and weak during this time.

  4. Rashes: Within 2-5 days of the fever onset, a red rash may appear on the skin. This rash can be itchy and spread across the body, but may fade and reappear over time.

  5. Nausea and Vomiting: Children with dengue often experience nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite, which can lead to dehydration if not managed properly.

  6. Bleeding Symptoms: In severe cases, dengue can lead to bleeding gums, nosebleeds, and easy bruising. This is a sign that medical attention is urgently needed.

When to Seek Medical Help

If your child shows any signs of dengue, it’s important to seek medical advice immediately. Early detection can prevent severe cases like dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome. Keep your child hydrated and closely monitor their symptoms.

By spotting the symptoms early, you can ensure your child gets the care they need and recover more quickly from dengue fever. Stay vigilant and protect your child during mosquito season!
